Le Chemin des Femmes is a feminist women’s choir that promotes musical research and civil resistance through the female voice.

 


Founded and directed by Meike Clarelli, vocal researcher, singer and teacher of Sensitive Singing, its goals include restoring, through work on songs and vocal research, the value of women and their resistance.

MANIFESTO.

Le Chemin des Femmes sings and resists

for women, for men, intersex, for those who identify with one gender and those who want to get out of it, but also for those who want to cross them all; for those who are gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and those who are not; for those who are migrants and those who do not move; for the romantic and the cynical, for those who believe in a God, for those who are animists and for those who are atheists; for those we love and for those who, unknown, are beside us.

She sings above all to tell and reiterate that what is particular and different in its subjective uniqueness should not feel constrained or forced to conform to everything else … but on the contrary has the right to feel free and free to desire and be as she wishes.

 

“Our choir is intergenerational and cross-cultural.
It unites professional and non-professional women, holds together women who are very different from each other: some of them are religious, some of them are anarchists, some of them are very young women about to meet life, some of them are mothers, some of them have a lifetime of experience behind them.
These diversities over time have taught us to understand what the practices of inclusion, listening, tolerance, freedom, play and resistance mean. They taught us to face fear and joy together. They taught us to be distinct and together at the same time.
Keeping this chorus alive was finally for us to enact concrete artistic, cultural and political actions. 
Resistance goes through the voice, becomes a voice-and when we sing, the diversity of each of us is embodied in one voice.”

 

Le Chemin des Femmes was born in November 2008 as a result of a Sensitive Singing workshop within the “Semira Adamu” project of the House of Women Against Violence in Modena and within a short time became a full-fledged choir. The
Sensitive Singing
, developed by Meike Clarelli herself, is a singing method that integrates various techniques directed at the voice, body perception and breath and that are aimed at the acquisition of an awareness of one’s own vocality.

The initial ensemble consists of women from different cultural backgrounds, united by a common passion for singing and the experience of migration. The women in the choir had had the courage to leave their country, sometimes their family, driven by the desire to find a better life and fulfill their plans through the experience of migration. A number of Italian women joined the chorus driven by a desire to learn about and meet musicalities different from their own, who share an experience of migration within the Italian territory and an inner flexibility, as well as a precarious life that makes them also feel somehow “migrant.” In its ten years of existence, the choir has seen over 50 female choristers from at least fifteen countries: the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Morocco, Moldova, Ukraine, Argentina, the United States of America, Spain (Basque Country) as well as, of course, Italy.

In recent years, more women have joined, not necessarily from different backgrounds or with migration experience; at the same time, the African component of the choir has begun to participate more flexibly, and the label of a migrant women’s choir is beginning to fit tighter and tighter: le Chemin des Femmes is above all a chorus of women united by a desire to sing and resist through voice.

The choir currently has about 20 members and is open to the entry of new women.

Meike Clarelli

Musician and vocal researcher with a diverse background ranging from music, theater, and poetry. He graduated in 2001 from the Emilia Romagna Teatri School for Actors in Modena, where he worked with directors and actors such as: Monica Klinger, Cesar Brie, Raffaella Giordano, Stefano Vercelli, Magda Siti, Mamadou Dioume.
He is attending the University of Contemporary Music and Jazz, at the Frescobaldi Conservatory of Ferrara.
He later studied singing and vocal pedagogy with Imke Buchholz McMurtrie (Germany), folk/ethnic singing with Germana Giannini, and began in 2001 with Elisa Benassi a course of study on psychophonetic singing and psychophony.
In 2004 he studied Sufi singing with music-therapist Alev Naqiba Kowalez. He studied Chinese music and Er Ou (traditional violin) with Master Wong in China. From 2003 to 2007 he studied opera singing with teacher Paola Matarrese. He has studied classical guitar, martial arts and Chinese medicine and has a background in psychoanalysis.
He has developed in recent years a methodology for working on the voice called Sensitive Singing which he has been teaching in Modena since 2004, in Bologna since 2015 and of which he holds seminars in various cities in Italy.

In 2008 she founded the Women’s Choir “Le Chemin des Femmes,” consisting of Italian women together with women from various parts of the world, which she still directs.
The same year he founded the music group 
La Metralli
, in which she is a singer and composer, winner of the 2012 Ciampi Prize and selected for the 2014 Tenco Prize.  Since 2016 he has joined as a singer and multi-instrumentalist in the music collective Two Winds which blends improvised music with electronic, jazz, contemporary and rock music.
Since 2014 he has been a member of the Collective Amigdala who produces perfomative installation works, as a sound dramaturge and is co-director artistic director of the 
Peripheral Festival

It took us many years to understand the different attitude of African women toward ‘rehearsing’: for them singing is spontaneous, playful, irreverent, sensual even when it has a spiritual and religious meaning. And in such a view for them, rehearsals are meaningless: you sing by living in the moment – and that’s it!

Le Chemin des Femmes works with improvisation and vocal polyphony, using voices as instruments
.

Rehearsals are also a time of composition from which experimental pieces are constructed that speak of the freedom of human beings, particularly women.

The repertoire at first drew from the cultural and musical substrate that each woman in the course of the meetings freely delivered to the group and that Meike rearranged. Over the years, contaminations from the pop world and contemporary music have also been added: today the choir sings songs that draw from the Ghanaian tradition to Brazilian and Afro-American, classical, pop and punk, in a mixture of melodies and popular themes from different geographical and cultural origins .

Le Chemin des Femmes benefits from the valuable collaboration of musician Davide Fasulo, who helps arrange the songs and writes the scores.

How crazy is that? The choir has a director who as a true artist is really crazy, but the individual singers are no less! Le Chemin des Femmes seeks to break conformity, sometimes with irreverent actions, giving birth to a style outside the lines, intended to be not only artistic expression, but also political and cultural.



The Cores – unruly voices

Jaya Association
, which gathers the experience and repertoire of Le Chemin des Femmes, declining it with its own strongly feminist, combative and intergenerational sensibility in the Bologna area. Together they bring to life a cohort in its rich and plural complexity of women of different generations, cultures, backgrounds, sexual orientation and social backgrounds.

The two choirs have been collaborating for years in the realization of special projects, concerts, moments of training and research. They are like a single choir made up of two souls who feel at the same time the forces and thrusts of the territories they belong to: Modena and Bologna.

The choir director and some of the singers talk about their love for music, the relationships they have built in nine years of working together, and their own desire to “endure through voice.”
The stories are interspersed with songs, moments from rehearsals and performances, under the banner of experimentation and fusion of very different sounds, from folk to pop to electronic.

to rearrange some songs from their repertoire: here they also sing Le Chemin des femmes and le Core . The popular song has been reinterpreted in an afrobeat and electro-soul key.

THE WOMEN’S HOUSE
(MODENA)

In 2008, the choir project was born in collaboration with.
The Women’s House of Modena
, with whom there is still a strong connection and sharing of the common mission: to give voice and value to women.

Over the years, the Association has initiated three service activities: hospitality and support for women victims of domestic violence, support for trafficked girls, and support for migrant women who face difficulties in the course of their migration project.
Compared to other Women’s Associations in the city of Modena, the Ass. Women’s House Against Violence onlus specifically targets individual women by aiming to ensure not only qualified service, but also cultural, social and political change within the community.

PLOT OF LANDS
(IMOLA)

Since 2010 she has collaborated with the association
Plot of Terre di Imola
, an intercultural association of women with whom various moments of artistic and cultural sharing have been shared over the years. In 2016, during a workshop at Trama di Terre, held by Meike Clarelli with the participation of the choir, the association’s guests became so enthusiastic about the project that they joined the choir that evening, enriching the repertoire with a Nigerian folk song dedicated to women, proposed by an asylum seeker and arranged on the spot.

On that occasion, Trama di Terre touched upon the liberating power that work on song and voice can have for women and decided to found her own choir, Trama di Voci, with which Le Chemin des Femmes shares activism and a willingness to sing to resist with voice, as well as to sing together on some occasions.

THE CORES, UNDISCIPLINED VOICES
(BOLOGNA)



The Cores – unruly voices

is a young women’s choir born in Bologna from the vocal workshop organized by the

The two choirs have been collaborating for years in carrying out special projects, concerts, training and research moments. They are like a single choir composed of two souls affected at the same time by the forces and drives of the territories to which they belong-Modena and Bologna.

AKUS – Musical opera for women warriors

In 2010 they starred in Akus – Opera musicale per donne guerriere (Akus – Musical opera for warrior women), a show produced by the Amigdala association and winner of the Prime Visioni 2010 call for entries curated by ERT- Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione, directed by Alice Padovani, musical direction Meike Clarelli.
AKUS in twi, one of the dialects spoken in Ghana, is the middle name given to girls born on Sundays. It is also the name of a mythical warrior who led her people in the struggle against the British.

L’intera struttura musicale dell’opera è la voce delle donne guerriere. È un suono destrutturato, ma allo stesso tempo puro e mai rassicurante. Il risultato è uno spettacolo di pochissime parole e molti suoni, naturalmente corale che alterna Bach a Dinah Washington, i ritmi tribali alle sonorità asiatiche, tutto rimescolato e riarrangiato su un prato verde, dodici sedie e una vasca di plexiglas. Uno spazio, una scena che creano un buco, rivelano un vuoto, un centro in negativo che assorbe, una vorticità che fa dei personaggi puri fenomeni, voci. Le donne sono semplici dinamiche di relazione. È la situazione a determinare gli atti. La forma è quella del sogno, vessillo allucinato dell’esistenza psichica, caos ordinato di cui si possono ipotizzare tre fasi: situazione traumatica originaria, movimento di resistenza, attesa. Ogni cambiamento di stato, ogni profonda trasformazione inizia da un’attesa. La voce è ciò che ne descrive il percorso. Voce imperfetta che sussurra, che grida. Voce libera dalla parola che diventa ponte d’incontro e luogo d’immersione per coprirsi con un velo umido di difesa. Voce che resiste cantando il confine della bellezza. Akus è la matericità di corpi femminili forti e significativi tali da tracciare delle direzioni poetiche di esistenza. Nella migrazione, la provenienza e la destinazione non sono soltanto punti geografici fissati su un mappamondo, sono soprattutto combattimenti continui che chiamano in causa il mutamento e il radicamento, la nostalgia e il desiderio di trasformazione, la difficoltà di definire forme strutturali e identitarie.
BURNING – guided vocal improvisation

In 2012, the choir produced Bruciando, a guided vocal improvisation that was born out of an encounter with dancer Laura Gibertini and actress Federica Rocchi. It is inspired by Butch Morris’s Conduction, but differs from it in the elaboration of a specific vocabulary and language that Le Chemin des Femmes has developed from its history of research and musical relationships. More than a concert, it can be called a musical experience that brings in a totally physical and non-theoretical dimension.

L'improvvisazione vocale e strumentale guidata o diretta dà la possibilità di alterare o dettare istantaneamente armonia, melodia, ritmo, articolazione o fraseggio, grazie alla manipolazione di altezza, intensità, timbro, tessitura, durata ed ordine. In tal modo il vocabolario dell’improvvisazione guidata risulta funzionale all’interno di qualsiasi forma, stile e tradizione musicale, e può essere impiegato come un ampliamento della direzione tradizionale e utilizzabile con altri interpreti musicisti e anche con danzatori. Avviene un’interazione tra il direttore e l’ensemble, tra la singola corista e il direttore, tra la corista e il compositore, tra l’ensemble e i danzatori, ed infine tra il compositore ed il pubblico che entra a far parte di questo incontro. È dunque scrittura simbolica e improvvisazione, composizione ed esecuzione allo stesso momento. L'improvvisazione guidata è una fonte che ispira l’ensemble corale e i danzatori a diventare un organismo vivente, capace di assumere nuove forme e di rivelare nuove espressività. Una necessità intimamente connessa al lavoro di gruppo e di fiducia e ascolto reciproco.
VOICE TO WIND – site-specific work by Claudia Losi

In 2018 the choir participated in the project. Voce a Vento, a work by Claudia Losi on Mount Bulgheria, set to music by Meike Clarelli, arranged by Meike Clarelli and Davide Fasulo for the Jazzi Association. It is an artistic intervention within a project aimed at fostering a new way of inhabiting Nature through a program of enhancement and narration of the environmental heritage, both tangible and intangible, of the Licusati (Camerota) area in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park (Salerno).

Claudia Losi propone un’azione poetica di carattere visivo e sonoro. L’intento è percepire e raccontare i luoghi, restituendo spazio e senso ad un immaginario collettivo del territorio. Si tratta di un “rimettere al mondo” la memoria dello spazio attraverso un rapporto reale e fisico con e nei luoghi (Landscape-Mindscape-Walkscape). La prima parte del progetto ha reso questi territori un “laboratorio camminato”, durante il quale diversi invitati, individuati dall’artista, hanno percorso e guardato insieme ai partecipanti alcuni sentieri del Monte Bulgheria, raccontando ognuno a modo proprio cosa significhi “fare paesaggio”. Da queste esperienze condivise e a partire dalle suggestioni proposte dagli ospiti, Claudia Losi ha composto un testo che ha abitato temporaneamente questi monti di calcare. Musicato da Meike Clarelli, il testo è stato cantato dal coro delle Chemin des Femmes, che, disposto lungo il sentiero in diversi punti del monte, ha accompagnato la camminata dei visitatori riempiendo lo spazio con un canto polifonico con uno schema musicale ricco e complesso. Insieme alle Chemin des Femmes, hanno cantato il coro Kamaraton di Camerota e il coro Vivat di Lentiscosa, con la partecipazione speciale di Elena Bojkova, cantante del coro Le Mystère des voix bulgares.
