The project invites an artist or group each year to work through a residency around the contents of AFOr to produce an artistic work, welcoming diverse and cross-cutting languages and formats.
The project aims to resignify the stories and biographies contained in AFOr, in a process that tensions official history with minor narratives, thus both individual and collective, social and human history with the geography of a place that has been subjected over the course of several decades, to radical transformations related to the world of labor and production locally, nationally and internationally.
At the same time, the curatorial and artistic process will allow for an expansion and reinterpretation of the contents of the archive, not only by re-actualizing and amplifying its role as a testimony, but also by critically interrogating the concepts of truth, documentability, transmissibility, inheritance, welcoming their resonances, echoes and consequences.
The project intends to constitute itself as a true research platform, where artistic production, territorial proximity, investigation, theoretical reflection will be interwoven through different devices (meetings, round tables, performance moments, residencies, community meetings, installations, publishing, other).
The multidisciplinary nature of Afor, an archive that has always woven together knowledge ranging from public history to linguistics, from anthropology to open source culture, is both the richness and the perspective on which To Echo/Fare Eco is based.
AFOr- Archives of Oral Sources is an open source collective project of telling the story of an area through the collection of community voices and memories, starting with that of the West Modena Artisan Village in an experimental form, which in 2021 is opening up to the rest of the city. The AFOr digital archive is a project that began in 2018 and is fed with new entries every year. Edited by: OvestLab (CivicWise Italia and Amigdala), Historical Institute of Modena, ConoscereLinux. In 2021 TO ECHO / FARE ECO dedicates its first residency to Cinzia Pietribiasi and Pierluigi Tedeschi, who as the Pietribiasi/Tedeschi Company sign the installation-performance VILLAGGIOARTIGIANO#MEMORIEDELSUOLO.
TO ECHO / FARE ECO takes on body, extension, depth and re-inhabits MOP-Modena Ovest Pavillion, the partly inhabited and partly disused building on Viale Emilio Po that, with a concerted re-signification process between owners, inhabitants and cultural stakeholders, continues the bet started two years ago, to give life to a contemporary art place in the decentralized, multicultural and hybrid vocation-living and working-heart of the city. That gesture of transformation ignited in 2019 and remained alive even during the lockdown of 2020, retains today its double movement that on the one hand, assumed some desires of an inhabiting community in order to revive an otherwise closed and hidden space, and on the other hand, converged training, processes and artistic gestures there, to regain its own urban presence through a different way of inhabiting.
